My long handled sanding/polishing tools.
In another post I mentioned that I had made a number of long handled sanding/polishing tools, based on the idea of the Ultimate Sanding Head by Vermec, for sanding the inside of turned boxes, vases and other deep hollowings.
The idea of sticking my hand or even fingers inside something that's turning seems to me foolhardy, if not downright dangerous, so these tools I use a lot. These tools did not take long to make using just bits and pieces and a few sanding heads together with some threaded rods and plastic tubing.
I have them in 2 drawers of the bench where my spindle work lathe is as per these photos.
Attachment 287371 and Attachment 287372
Here are some close up of the various sanding/polishing heads.
Attachment 287373 These are for sanding the bottom corners of boxes. Made from some bits of foam, velcro and a threaded rod. Over the rods are some plastic tubing for comfortable handling.
Attachment 287374 These are round for sanding the sides. I used various sizes of rubber tubing that were originally the sanding disks for use in a drill press. Never used them for that but finally found a good use.
Attachment 287376 These are for sanding the flat bottoms. For these I used the velcro type sanding disks for use in power sanding. The short metal shaft unscrews and can be screwed straight onto a 1/4" threaded rod.
Attachment 287375 These are for applying polish through a narrow opening of say vases. I bough a set from CT some years ago ( they no longer stock this item as I bought them very cheap when they were selling out of them) and again they screw onto 1/4" threaded rods.
Attachment 287377 Finally a Vermec Ultimate Sanding head fixed onto a long stick for use when I 'm not using the deep hollowing tool.
They are cheap and simple to make and has made sure I still have ten fingers.
Peter.

Fantastic
Know what I will put off doing tomorrow. I should make some of these, but probably won't get around to it. Good idea though, and nicely displayed

Peter as always you have done what others would love the time to do excellent ideas
I have found using these pads invaluable for bottom and sides internal of 2 vases I have just done these I picked up from Bunnings the flat face great for the bottom the round one excellent for shaped and sides gives a smooth finish. Just make sure its the Blue ones you grab as TTIT tell me he has used the Black ones and has found they rip like 20 grit. Drill Accessory Strip It Wheel 100mm Paint Rust Dble Bsw1002 I/N 6320424 | Bunnings Warehouse
These photos were for a previous job done depth was not to far a reach the vases are 8" & 9" deep narrow neck. I used a stainless steel rod to which I attached these and mounted the rod into the drill slow RPM on the lathe fast on the drill
I always use the tool rest to help steady the tool and rod ext just like using a gouge tool.
Edited to add more info and a pic
I also have a three sizes short medium and long 300mm set of these drill bit extensions which I have used they work brilliant in the battery drill.

The Vermec sanding head comes with a short (removable) 11 mm shaft that is clamped in the hollowing tool instead of a cutter.
A few years ago I bought , as part of a small Melbourne group, from the Sandpaper Man Velcro backed sandpaper sheets in the various grits so I cut the strips as needed.
