    Default As hard as concrete

Just finished a few more needle/toothpick cases and
this one was a nightmare ... Desert Gidgee.

It is one of the hardest woods I have tackled but the
effort was well worthwhile. The photograph does not
do it justice as the result is stunning. The fiddleback
grain stands out like Grandpa's ears.

Thanks to Ken Wraight for the original blank.

Now, back to the grindstone to sharpen the chisels again.

Best as Pat for a test run on his new Skew it might work

    Yummy piece of wood

maybe next piece you just shape with the grinder, save wearing out the chisels

Nice bit of timber! I love the way the fiddleback matches the beads on the end caps

    G'day Allan,
Looks like ringed Gidgee - beautiful stuff. Tough timber indeed - especially if it came from a dead tree as it takes up the silica making cutting/sharpening a nightmare DAMHIKT!!

    Nice work Allan.

Yeah, Gidgee is among our densest timbers.

    Finishes really well.

With bowls you have to take care to keep the heat down else you get cracks or checks along the way.
    Cheers, Ern
