    Default Hello from Oldgreybeard

    Good morning all,
Just a quick post to introduce myself.

I live in Mt Waverley Vic and retired from my own steel manufacturing business 2 years ago.
I have been turning for 10+ years - lathe is Tecknatool Nova 3000 with variable speed motor, outrigger arm, additional bed, Nova chuck and Bonham chuck, vacuum chuck (13" face plate).
Other equipment includes 14" bandsaw, 12" table saw, bobbin sander, etc.

My other interest is photography. I have taught photography for the past 9 years. I am happy to help any member with photographing thier woodwork. I am a Nikon man (have 5) and have used and taught Photoshop for almost 10 years.

I look forward to contributing to the forum and meeting some of you in the future.

Bob (I do have a grey beard and with 6 grandcildren - they would would probably endorse the "old" tag)

Welcome to the Forum Bob and thanks for the offer to help with photography. There's a few out in the forum world that don't pay enough attention to photographing their work and hence, don't present it very well. I hope they take up your offer if they live close enough.

it would have to be one hell of a beard - eldest 4 all have thier drivers licences.

Primarily i enjoy turning bowls - Have just finished a 13" bowl in nicely figured Jarrah. If i get a chance tomorrow, I will set the camera up and give you a look at it. it would be good to get some constructive criticism as I have never had my work assessed by experienced turners.

I'm a Canon man myself (hope you don't hold that against me) but I tend to always take my workshop photos with the camera on my phone as it is always in my pocket.

    Where did you teach photography??

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Greybeard".
There are a heap of members in and around Melbourne.
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [work in progress] photos with build notes.
    Enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork/turning..
    Cheers crowie

PS - I wish you were closer as I too would appreciate photography assistance especially assistance as to which digital SLR & lens to consider purchasing for both HD videoing & sports photos along with closeups.....have been suggested a Canon D5 plus a few different lens while a forum mate has a Nikon D7100????

I think you would be happy with either of these. Depending on how seriously you want to become involved in sports photography, a zoom lense such as the Nikon 80 - 400mm or Canon 100 - 400 mm is ideal, but not a budget item.

G'day OGB and welcome to the madness.
