    Default help....mental blockage

    hi guys,
i have been given this huge piece of rosewood [well for me!!!]
and was asked to make a xmas present for the owners wife!!
he has had it stored for 15 years,so i guess i am a bit nervous
as to where to start !! any suggestions would be appreciated
prepared it for turning with my little bandsaw which took awhile
final size was 900mm x200mm ,and he wants something like a vase
thought i would ask the brains on the forum for ideas/suggestions
    cheers smiife

    Default The Rosewood.

    Hi,
Wood most likely make a nice Table Lamp.
Could drill a 12mm. hole from both ends, doesn't have to be perfect, just as long as they meet. Might need to make a larger Base.
    Regards,

    Smife,
You will have to bodge it. You have a better lathe than me but few of us have gear to hollow that deep.
Get a large forstener bit and the longest extention you can lay your hands on. After that shape the top opening as deep as you are happy to go.It is dark down there and only other turners will know. I dont think they will need it hollowed deeper than is ptactical to stick flowers and the like in.

    Regards
    John

Make a nice vase 450 X 200 and save the other half as reserve in case the first one explodes. If the first one is fine keep the other half as your fee.
So much timber, so little time.

For me I would try and find out more about this guys wife, likes, hates etc as it will then make it easy to sort something out. but if its to be a surprise then you may have to grill the Hubby, but either way you need more info.

Let me give you my experience, many years ago my wife asked me if I could make a coffee table for the lounge area. As what she liked was horrendously expensive, no worries say I. To shed I went, sorting out timber for the top, legs etc and doing a sketch of the table, worked it out that a rectangle might be best. Hmm thought I might run it by the Boss just in case etc on size and shape so I wandered back in to the house andwas informed that the only shape that would work here was round period.

    A close shave!

I agree with Paul. Cut it in two or even three. You could make a set of vases about 280mm deep . If you want to only cut it in two, I would go with a pair of table lamps .
I look forward to seeing what you come up with

    Hi Smiifi
No it's the natural it had originaly been split for a fence post and left in the bush I just cleaned up the unturned area brushing with wire brush then blow torch then soft fibre brush and sprayed with 60 percent gloss miratone.
