Vari speed mod
I am a newbie with a Harbor Freight lathe. For my purpose it works pretty well except that the lowest speed is 700 rpm. There are times when I would like to slow it down. I saw on utube a guy using a variable router controller to slow down his lathe. So the question is can using that controller damage my motor

Is your lathe motor a synchronous or universal motor?
Those router controllers only work on universal motors. They also have limited torque at loW RPMS.
The most common way to vary speed on a lathe motor is to use a 3 phase motor and a Variable speed drive (VSD/VFD).
