Drilling holes in turned pieces
I have been trying to turn a shallow plate with a series of various sized holes around the rim. I am having trouble getting the edges of the holes sharp. I drill them with good quality forstner bits and then remove more wood from the drilled area, but I still get "hairy" edges. So far I have tried this on maple only.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions.Mark J

Have you tried putting a piece of tape, (masking or duct type) over the top and bottom of the rim, then drilling. Should keep the hairiness down to a minimum. Just an idea. I've tried this when drilling holes in any piece of wood. It usaully helps keep the hole cleaner.

My suggestion for what its worth:
After you've drilled the holes as above, wick the edges with the thin cyanoacrylate. Let it dry, then turn the finishing cuts like you did before. The cyano (superglue) will keep the fibres compact.
