Try the Woodturners society of Qld. Inc. They are at Greenslopes, not so far away.

Lia ,
You may come across a turner who is local to you at the Brisbane Woodturning Symposium
Welcome to The 2010 Australian Woodturning Symposium .
But you had better hurry , it finishes on Sunday .
There are Hands-on After Classes being held the following week at number of locations around the South-East of Queensland Welcome to The 2010 Australian Woodturning Symposium
good luck

Lia,
As some others have mentioned..talk to Rob McKee at Woodturners Society of Qld in Pine Street, Greenslopes.
I have done 3 courses there...Spindle, Bowl & Sharpening and they are worth every cent...especially for beginners as I am.
