Can anyone ID this Woodturner's Mark?
Hi fellow forum woodturners,
I inherited a turned red mallee burl vase and I am trying to identify the maker.
Unfortunately it does not have a name on the base, but there is a maker's mark burned into it (looks like a cross with arrow heads on the four points).
A google search suggests the shape of the vase could be made by a Mr. Bill Jackson.
The other person who comes to mind is the late Brian Poynton who was know to my father as a mutual musical instrument maker.
I do not recall whether Brian ever turned wood though.
My parents did travel extensively in the outback during the eighties, so it could be anyone....
I hope someone could respond who is familiar with the maker's mark on the base?
Cheers,
FrankG

I knew Bill Jackson and Bryan Poynton and visited both their workshops and they both visited mine. From what I know, Bill Jackson was more a very good high end Cabinet Maker/ Restorer. A real character with non stop stories of UK based restoring and Making . As well as US and Australian. He probably turned wood very well but I don't know about any Aussie hardwood burl turning . What Google search makes you think it could be his?
Bryan Poynton certainly turned wood and had an amazing Wadkin RS 10 wood lathe. From what I know of his work it was a lot more involved than just Burl turning but he may have done that as well. I messaged one of his close mates who introduced Bryan to me and showed him your post and the mark on the bottom of your turning. He said its not one of Bryan's . Its not in the shape / style and Bryan hand tool cut his marks in and did not burn them in. I hope that info is of some help.

Thank you for your informative reply Rob.
The only reason I came up with Bill Jackson's name was a Google search and the following pics came up, each attributing the turned burl to a Bill Jackson from Australia.
Of course, this does not necessarily mean anything, but it was a start for me.
It made me curious..... but irrespective of the maker, the turned burl stands proudly in my home now.
Thanks again,
Cheers,

I can certainly see why you think it may be one of Bill’s tunings now Frank . After seeing that i’ll try and get his sons phone number and ask him. My brother has a contact that knows him. I’ll get back to you if I can get the info .

I am getting the feeling of the possibility there may be two Bill Jackson's in the timber game here .
This is the guy I knew.
The Passion of Furniture Making - Australian Wood Review
Ive just spoken to a former apprentice of the Bill Jackson above and he also does not know him doing any wood turning like that. There probably is a Bill Jackson wood turner here in AU but I cant find any info on him with a quick search.
