    Question Identifying trees/timber

G'day all, and happy new year.

I am trying to find a book on identifying Australian native trees, and more specifically Western Australian natives. The DEC have a couple of small publications but I was trying to find something more comprehensive. I have a reasonable knowledge of our local timbers, (sw corner WA ), but would like to get some pieces from goldfields, wheatbelt and other areas.

Does anyone know of any such publication.

    Cheers

EUCLID - Eucalypts of Southern Australia; it a CD and program your can key things out knowing bugga all about botany. If you go to the web site euclid - Google Search
They have many other keys many free. Much easier than books but you will need to take bits home or get a lap top to take with you.

    Thanks Glenn,

I will have a look at that. A lap top is on my 'wish list' (which is much bigger than my 'can have list')

Woops this is the link I meant to leave
CSIRO PUBLISHING - Books & CDs
This one may have some usefull info to Lucidcentral.org > Home don't bother with their free download unless you want to write your own key. It contains no database.

Oakchip, you might want to check out "World Woods in Color" by William A. Lincoln

Many color plates with accurate color and grain configuration, and a wealth of other info included.
    Cheers,

Oakchip try and get hold of a copy of Eucalypts of the Western Australian goldfields (and adjacent wheatbelt) G.M. Chippendale. This is an oldie but goody, mine dates back to 1973. This used in conjunction with another publication from primary industries, Eucalyptus buds and fruits, also edited by Chippendale will cost you very little and are an excellent reference for easy I.D. The book also has info on growing conditions, timber uses, propagation etc.
    cheers, seriola

Obviously there has been some reclassification etc. but easy enough to work around, cheers, seriola

Correct title Ern - written by MIH Brooker and DA Kleing

Vol2 is 'south - western and Southern Australia'
seems to cover all of SA and the bottom half of WA and a little of northwestern NSW

Vol 3 covers 'Northern Australia' so North WA, NT and Qld

They might even be in their third ed by now - not cheap either but well set out etc

Welcome. But you've mixed 2 titles up Oakchip.

    ....

I lust after the Field Guide ... but at the size of a minor phone book it's not exactly something you can slip into a jacket pocket.
    Cheers, Ern

Dead right Ern, I meant the field guide. To have that quality of info with me I think its either the field guide or Euclid and a laptop, so the bulk is something I'll have to live with. The Vol 2 is quite hard to find at the moment , but I think I have found one at a book shop in Perth, where I just happen to have a gift voucher.

    Thanks again
    cheers
