I have 6 chucks that use a pair of tommy bars.

They do have the advantage that they take up less space between centres & the load is moved closer to the headstock so there is/are less leverage & therefore less strain/pressure/force applied to the headstock bearings.

My big lathe has a spindle lock for indexing, I use that to hold the spindle so I can operate just one tommy bar to grip the work & then I can release it & use both hands for the final tightening.

My small lathe doesn't have the spindle lock but it is small enough that I can brace one tommy bar against the bed of the lathe to free up one hand.

I have turned small wooden handles for all my tommy bars & the bars are held to the lathe with strong magnets so I have no problem finding them.

    G'day Peter

I have a G3 that has hardly been used, sitting here at home with a 1" x 10 TPI insert fitted (think yours is 1" x 10 TPI) that you can have for $100 deleivered to your door sometime next week when I'm in town if you want it.
    Cheers

Thats the only reasonable argument I've seen in their favour to date

Thanks DJ for this kind offer. Mine is indeed the 1" x 10 TPI so I'm pleased to buy it from you. PM sent with my details.
