    Default Knife steels

    Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen

Sometime ago, a mate of mine showed me his new knife steel which his butcher mate had made for him. It was superb at sharpening knives, but the handle was crap, I told him it was crap. He stated, reckon you can do better???? Yep.

So I re-turned his handle and have it back to him. Wow. I had better show my butcher mate.

Anyhoo, I have made quite few handles for Steve the Butcher, mostly plastic, some timber like Sheoak, Curly Jarrah, Olive and Mulga, they look good, but the plastic ones I reckon are superb. Most hunters who come out with us see them and are impressed. I love the High Viz orange handle, might save me from losing it one day in the grass. My personal steel is made from a magnificent piece of York Gum Burl. Looks superb, but I am going to exchange it for the high vis orange.

He makes the steels from old files, only high quality steel ones. He grinds off the teeth and then pickles the blade. As a vutcher, he takes the completed steel to work and uses it for a day as a test.

The photo show two steels he has just made. One in Adelaide Crows colours and another one for his brother.

The next batch of handles glued up ready to go, including one in his little jig for glueing.

    Thanks for looking
