Neil, M33 x 3.5 is the future, whether we like it or not. All of the larger Record Power lathes come into this country with M33 x 3.5 spindle thread. I myself would prefer having that size spindle thread, it would mean I could pick up local stuff in Germany, or order stuff in from USA or from wherever in the world. As I understand it, Australia, (maybe NZ as well) are the only users of the M30 x 3.5 spindle thread.
Really frustrating when you see stuff in a shop in Germany that is begging to be used, but they don't manufacture that thread size. Vicmarc with their latest chuck the VM150, only have it in direct thread in two sizes, M33 x 3.5 and 1¼" x 8 other than that you are looking at using an insert. I have seriously thought of changing my spindle over to get that size, I may just do that one day, pretty simple to do and surprisingly, not expensive.
I agree with you that the record Power lathes look a bit puny compared to most Vicmarc units, but their largest unit, which is the same as Neil has just picked up, appears to be the same lathe with their colour and badge on the front.
If one is going to change a belt, or do anything on the Laguna headstock, pulling the spindle out is simple as anything.
Mick.

That may be, Mick, but those of us that have been at it for awhile here in Australia have accumulated a lot of kit to go on the M30x3.5mm thread. I reckon I would have at least 20 chucks and faceplates with that thread. For anyone in the same position the cost of transition over to 33x3.5mm would be sobering! New inserts alone would set me back over $500 and dedicated faceplates and chucks another $500. A non 30x3.5mm lathe would have to be $1,000 better/cheaper to even get onto the starting blocks for me to consider.
But, never say never!
From what I can see, that Record Maxi-1 is a re-badged Woodfast C1000x, but with a more restricted EVS range. A 1.5HP motor will do almost everything most woodturners will need. I have the original yellow version of the C1000x and it is good lathe, IME. That configuration is also one of the few in this price bracket with a substantial outboard platform and a dedicated outboard banjo/toolpost, which I like.Stay sharp and stay safe!

Thanks, Faulko, for picking up on that significant error.
I can no longer edit the in-post table I posted earlier, but I've adjusted my spreadsheet which I've attached to this post to now show:
Lathe VL240 Centre Height to Bed 240mm Swing over bed/gap 490mm
How you get a 490mm swing from 240mm of centre height over the bed is a puzzle, but that is what Vicmarc has on its website.Stay sharp and stay safe!

The Woodfast 3040 does have reverse and doesn't need to be hard wired into 20A circuit, it has a standard 15A plug, mind you it wouldn't be a bad idea.
Mine is also a 4HP 3PH motor with inverter to 240V 1PH electronic variable speedNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Hi,
Anyone has any experience and thoughts on Harvey T50 or T60 lathes? Apparently, Gregmach are selling these and come with M33 x 3.5 thread.
Cheers

Large lathes
Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen
Great thread, very informative and would prove very useful for anyone seeking a new lathe. Neil well done for this initiative
Neil, if I may.

You could purchase just the one insert/thread adapter and thread lock it onto the spindle thread. The way I see it it would cost only $30 as opposed the $1000, or have I over simplified it?
Sincerely
Willy
