Default Larger lathes currently available here in Australia

Another thread on this forum on the latest changes to Woodfast's operations included some discussion on their new biggy, the WL3040. That prompted me to bring together an update on the current options for bigger lathes that are currently available to us here in Australia.

For the purposes of this exercise I defined 'bigger' as lathes with 2HP and above.

These lathes are not where novices or occasional turners would start looking to buy a lathe. Someone else might like to do a similar exercise for 'mid-range' lathes that are more suited there and post that as a separate thread.

Most of us don't need a bigger sized lathe. For example, I rarely need any more than the 1.5HP on my current lathe... I can turn with that any blank that I can manage to lift onto the lathe nowadays...... the one exception being the coring of larger blanks, however, most turners are not into coring so that is not a factor for them.

I have only included lathes in this list that are available from the 'primary' manufacturers and not the re-badged and generics that have been engineered down to a lower price point on the basis that by the time you are considering lathes in this range that shortcuts on build to achieve a lower price point won't be among your primary considerations.

There are a few gaps in the list where I couldn't readily find the details, like the prices on the Stubbies. That could be a bit like some of the watches I saw on display in a shop in Zurich without a price tag... they say if you have to ask for the price, you can't afford it!

If anyone has any of the details that I couldn't readily find I will add those. Also, if you think there are any local offering in this bigger lathe range from a 'primary' manufacturer that I have missed then let me know and I will add those.

Should I decide to get a bigger lathe than my current otherwise adequate 1.5HP one, I now have an up to date list (as of Oct 2020) as my starting point that might also be useful for anyone else who might be doing likewise.

Of course, there may still be the odd old Wadkin lurking out there waiting to be snapped up by you, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen...

PS - I'm not sure how well a wide spreadsheet will display with the forum software, so I'll add it as a downloadable PDF file as an attachment to one of my following post.

Hmm... the forum software didn't like the size of that spreadsheet table. I'll try and see if breaking it into two will work. Yes, I know that somewhat defeats the purpose of a table, but some may not have spreadsheet software on heir devices to display the attachment in the above post.

OK, as it turned out, the data displayed by the forum is more complete than in the spreadsheet. For whatever reason the multiple lines within some cells got truncated to just one line in the file!

Anyway, the attached PDF file looks to be all there...

Hello Neil, I can confirm my 2009 manufacture Woodfast M910 has 15mm thru the tail and headstock. The why they (Woodfast) went with only a 10mm knockout bar is beyond me.

Looks good Neil, should be a very helpful thread.

There is another lathe on the cusp of being available in Australia, at least in Victoria anyway it would seem as they are taking orders. The Record Power Coronet Regent Heavy Duty unit, seems to fit the power requirements. It has a 2kW power output. One interesting feature is that it can be run completely left handed by turning the head 180º, sliding it to the other end and running the lathe in reverse. A feature my left handed brother would probably love.

The Head Stock bearings of the Laguna lathes, are standard sealed bearings, two per unit.

    Thanks, Mick.

Yes, but interestingly enough it will come with M33 x 3.5 thread. That has me puzzled. Who here uses that? It seems like they are just offloading their Northern Hemisphere stuff on us without trying!

I did see a bunch of Coronets being used on the woodturning cruise in 2018. A decent enough lathe that nobody complained about but to my eye they did look a bit puny when lined up beside a Vicmarc.

I might wait until they have been delivered and I get an authoritative thumbs up from someone before adding them to the list.

    Thanks, RDS.

Hadn't been added to the Stubby website (that I could see) when I looked, but if you have the specs and the price I will add it to the list.
