New lathe ordered
Well, I’ve done something I thought I wouldn’t be in a position to do for a longtime, if ever. Earlier today I ordered my dream lathe. I enjoy a little window shopping online and decided a year or so back that I’d love to get a big solid lathe that will last forever and be big enough for any project I throw at it. I really like the look of the Laguna Revo 2436, but at the price couldn’t afford one, by a long way. I’ve had a little luck - the holiday I cancelled as the lockdown was starting saved me some money and being under lockdown and working from home for the last five months I’ve cut my fuel and entertainment costs dramatically, and have now got enough money that I could look at lathes and seriously consider buying. I thought I’d check a comparative price on a Vicmarc, just to see how far above my budget they are, and I discovered that there is a local importer, and he’s pretty competitive on his pricing. So I’ve ordered a VL300 BM. It comes with a locally sourced motor and VFD, and stand, and while it’s not as modern as the Laguna, I reckon it’ll age a little better. Just waiting for the final shipping price and then I’ll start watching the driveway for the delivery van. I’m like a kid on Christmas Eve.

Good for you Colin.
It has taken a while for you to do the deed.
Like to know your comments when you get it.
Supplier?

Thanks Phil, the supplier is Carel van der Merwe from Pretoria, his business is called Creative Turning. He turns, teaches and supplies equipment. I’m waiting for him to get back to me with a price for the shipping (I don’t have a bakkie and it’ll never fit in my car). I was hoping I’d have it by now, but I’m sure it’s worth the wait.
I’ll definitely give my comments on it when it arrives, and you’re welcome to pop over for a closer look if you’d like.

There’s good news and there’s bad news...
The good news is that my lathe arrived.
The bad news is that it didn’t survive the trip unscathed - when they opened the back of the truck, it had fallen on its face and the pallet was mostly destroyed. I know the road they traveled on (a back road not often used) and I know exactly why the lathe fell over. Give that they left the depot at 9am and only reached me by 9pm, they were tired, stressed and rushed, and they hit a bump while going too fast. The road has many, many speed bumps (around the settlements) and some of them are big enough to make driving over them in a normal sedan tricky.
The good news is that the damage is superficial, the paint is chipped, dinged and scratched (every piece and part has lost some paint).
The bad news is that, even though it works and is functional, I was bitterly disappointed - this was a once in a lifetime gift to myself, and I’d never quite be able to see past the damage.
But the really, really good news is that when I contacted the supplier, he insisted on replacing it with a brand new one, he’s driving down this weekend to swap over the stand and motor, and will bring the lathe when his next shipment arrives. It’s such a relief to be dealing with someone with ethics, who understands customer service and is prepared to do whatever he can to make things right.

That's a bummer.
At least the supplier is genuine and will make things right for you.
Wonder what he will sell the damaged one for .

but educational, and it will only improve your turning Colin. They didn't come into your house, you put forward what you wanted to discuss.
