I think I've lost first dibs on the Nova to a 12 yo
any recommendations on a second lathe

Bytheway we finished the handle and made a head for it to turn it into a gavel and now it's a prop in the school play. I think his teacher wants it to keep control of the little blighters

Nice work... I guess your budget will drive the choices. I think the Woodfast M305 midi would be a good option. Solid cast lathe with the option of a bed extention for longer work. Jim Carroll has them for just under $500.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Thanks Ed you are once again spot on - no contest just buy one of these.

No seriously you already have a lathe with a swivel head that will do big bowls and spindles at least a metre in length.

What do you want to do with the other lathe,

If it is more bowls, will the peice be big and out of balance (you then need EVS ) will it be real turning eg spindle - pens. then how long do you need. The thing about long lathes is the footprint they have on the floor how much room in the shed.

This could be the oportunity to buy that "one i would really like" lathe.

    Hope that helps

    Cheers.
    regards

    David

    Default That globe.

    Hi Sawdust Maker.
Nick, I know that this is fact, but some will think it is fiction.
I was told yeeeaaarrrs ago that Fluorescent Light was very bad for your eyes, as it strobes your work. Go & ask the Opticians, & see what they tell you.
I would hate to see No.1 Son with bad eyesight at His young age. I use 2 x 120Watters
    + a 60 W with the bendy arms.
That Yellow Woodfast Midi Lathe with Variable Speed, would be my buy, even without the V/S, the belt is very easy to change speed wise.
Well I suppose that has confused you, but it was meant to help.
    Regards,
    issatree.

    Thanks for all the replies
the post was a bit tongue in cheek as I merely showing the lad having fun
The trick will be to keep him interested

Hey Calm, can ya turn pens on the stubby?

after having a variable control there'd be no way I'd want to change belts etc

His own lathe would help making pens to sell so he can buy tools or a car

One of the masters on the board tells me that the Stubby won't turn finials - as the head and tail stocks do not meet at centre. (Said master has a few Stubbies, perhaps 4?)

That makes it hard to turn 1mm finials!

David, you should have bought a Vic. Great lathes and even better accessories. (Not too much run-out on their chucks, but someone will no doubt correct me). That said, very disappointed with the rests.....

Dunno what you paid for the Stubby, but I'd bet your could have had a VL100 plus a VL 200 for the same money.
All this from a proud Vicmarc convert!
