    Default New Lathe Finally Here

    Out with the old ..........

And in with the new ..........

    IMG_3690.jpg

Finally arrived on Monday, and fortunately yesterday and today have only been in the mid 30's here, so I managed to get it unpacked, assembled and moved into position (it's a heavy bit of gear).
Forecast for the next few days is low to mid 40's (which means getting close to 50 in the shed) so I don't think I'll be using it for at least a few days yet.
Started it up and amazed to see how quiet it runs (compared to the old one anyway) and it has more speed range adjustment options than I think I'm ever likely to use. Some very nice touches though, including accurate and easily read measurements on the tailstock quill.
It's quite a bit higher (between centres) than the old one - and I had the old one mounted on wooden blocks so that I could bolt it down to the floor. Will be interesting to see how I find the new tirning height.
The only chuck I have at the moment is the basic one supplied by Hare & Forbes for the old lathe (I got an adaptor so that it fits the new lathe). So I'm now searching some sites for a decent chuck, preferably that will screw directly onto the 30mm x 3.5mm pitch spindle on this lathe. So far considering a Vicmarc VL100 but still looking at options.

All I have to do now is sell the old lathe - I've advertised in farcebook market pages but not confident I'll get any takers around here.

Congratulations on the new arrival, you'll have plenty of fun when the temperature drops a little. As for a new chuck, don't look any further than Vicmarc. I have 5of them now and would buy more if the boss would let me

    Cheers,
    Peter

You won't regret purchasing Vicmarc chucks, well worth the small premium for long lasting quality.

    nice lathe btw.

    Default Vicmarc Dedicated thread chucks.

You have 2 choices of chucks with this lathe. It will all depend on the diameter of what you want to turn.
Your main workhorse will be the VM100 Chuck with a range of jaws will do a lot of work for you.
If you need to go bigger in the dovetail jaws then the VM120 Chuck will be the choice there.
Unfortunately they are not compatible with each other so what ever you buy for one will not fit on the other.

Thanks Jim. I've just placed an order for a VM100 chuck plus a set of shark jaws from your website.

    Default It Works

Weather has cooled down here a bit after a week of above 40° temperatures ending with 46° on Wednesday. So I've been having a play with the new toy. Still waiting to receive the new Vicmarc chuck, but my old one still does the job. I had a piece of Tasmanian Blackwood that I was given a while back, so decided to do something with it. Harder timber than I was expecting, especially the end grain, but the lathe handled it with ease. It's great to finally be working with a "quiet" lathe instead of the rattle and clatter of a reeves drive. Anyway - the wife seems to like this bowl and has already claimed it.
