    Default a few thoughts

Would it be feasible to simply make one out of timber?

It seems to me that a giant chunk of iron is useful, but if one were to make it of LVL or ply, it would be pretty strong.

I saw a dude making some out of steel and one of timber here....

I've seen a banjo snap (not mine) so I know they do take a lot of force.

Default a variable speed motor - use a tool?

    Question for the gurus....

Would it be feasible to make a motor out of a power tool, such as a router?

It has a variable motor already.... a bolt, a few wooden wheels for "pulleys" and a fan belt from SuperCheapAuto?

I was thinking one of the newer brushless motors would be useful. The idea came from the fact I use my little Makita RT0700 for heaps of things. Its a little powerhouse. If one were to get a Bigger Version of the beast it might have the ball bearings for the job

What about using a CNC motor body, such as we often discuss to use as a router body in a table lift? Those come as a ready package, super cheaply and would possibly kill two birds with one stone?

Would you consider a old Singer sawing machine a power tool?.
If so one of my heroes might have a suitable answer.
Just think family time in front of the Tv while your turning.

That was the first lathe I ever turned on... it was a converted treadle sewing machine, although I'm not sure if it was a Singer as I'm a bit vague on the details given that it was over 60yrs ago....

I didn't do the conversion myself, as I was only 10 yrs old at the time. What I do remember is that we used sharpened screw drivers as scrapers to make yo-yos that we then painted with silver frost paint to make then look more like bought ones. The irony of it is that we were using camphor laurel wood of which we had an endless supply and with just the natural wood polished up they would sell like hot cakes nowadays in any gallery for multiple times more than a supermarket yo-yo!
    Stay sharp and stay safe!

Or are there more universal banjos around that have the quick release lever that fit with different model lathes?
Have a look at the tool rest cam lock in this video DIY Quick Release Cams - YouTube. I made one for my first lathe. Not all that difficult and it worked better than having to use a spanner every time I wanted to move the toolrest
