Lilly pilly (Syzygium something or other) test pieces
Hi.
SWMBO requested some pen holders for her desk for this time of home schooling and self isolating.
I thought I would play with shapes and use a recently felled tree as the drought took its toll on our garden over the previous winter and summer.
I was quite pleasantly surprised by the colour, the bigger of the logs had some yellow through it.
The timber is very light.
I finished it roughly only sanded to 240, and the coating is melted wax from tea light candles (like I said, rough )
I'm happy, she's happy, and I'm considering some similar shapes to use as shot glasses/sipper glasses from the same timber.
Any feedback is appreciated. Like the cumquat goblets I turned last week, this is the first time I've turned in a long time and the first using my late grandfather's chisels and home made lathe.I forgot what i was taught, I only remember what I have learnt

They look pretty good, more so considering your gear to hand. Lilly Pilly trees can get quite tall, but in general what we see in suburbia are the smaller or dwarf varieties.
I have only turned Lilly Pilly once, it was more like a slender branch than the trunk I was told I had. It was very nice to turn. I made a series of egg cups and soaked them in a food safe oil. Only have one egg cup left for personal use, the rest have gone to kitchens various.
Mick.
