That may not be thick enough even for a platter if it has significant twist or warp. Depends on how much thickness is removed in flattening...

Pieces like that I tend to keep for feature infills in turnings made from contrasting timbers. eg. a Huon disk inset into the lid of a Redgum or Jarrah box has good visual appeal.

There is a minor learning curve in learning to sand without the darker sawdust 'staining' the softer Huon, but imho it's worthwhile.


Even if I did decide to make a round platter from that piece, I'd trim off & keep the corner wastes for just such features in future work.

I like the waviness of the piece. why not keep it square glue a mounting block then put a tenon in the back then turn it round and put a small cove in the middle, it will definitely be a nice talking point.

stick a vacuum on the back of the sanding block, or in it. although am yet to try on a turned piece

Thanks for the thoughts,

The piece is 42mm thick, has 2 "natural" edges and has a corner broken, I would at least need to turn the corners to get rid of the broken area, that being said the natural edges are on the long ends so would be the first to go If I tried to turn away the sawn edges.

I have no shortage of bowl blanks at the moment, and like the idea of using this piece to embellish another, not sure I have anything truly dark on the shelf at the moment.

Maybe when I have some more skills, tools and ideas, the use of this piece will appear.

If you square the blank a square bowl would look good \.
