    Default Malley burl bowls- WIP.

A customer came in with some Malley burl root balls rescued from the fire wood pile. Definitely to nice to burn. She wanted some bowl made for her family that would remind them of home. After gazing at them trying to work out an angle of attack I started on the smallest one. Some very nice wood hiding in there.
This one will have a little bowl hovering above the bigger bowl, that is mostly not there. If you know what I mean. Fun. Lots of hand sanding required cos as I say, its mostly not there. A little hard on the fingers.

Lots of cups of tea and gazing for the next one now.

That's where the velcro-backed 2" sanding discs in a drill come in really handy.

This, I can totally relate to!

Many a good find in the firewood pile . Looking good so far, are you going to turn the outside too, or is that it?

Reminds me of this one I did from a piece I found buried in my mum's garden (see here post #39: https://www.woodworkforums.com/showth...69#post1384769)

    Hi Ann Marie

Could I suggest that you use some of the proceeds from this job to purchase some larger jaws for your chuck?

That's a rather small spigot for a large hard lumpy Mallee stump.

I look forward to seeing the finished Job.

It did remind me of a wedding gift I made for a family member 20 years ago.

They wanted a large bowl and I suggested Red gum.

They said no, Mallee Burl please.

Thinking this would change their mind I said "you find the Burl".

They did. They turned up with a 70KG stump strapped into the back seat of their little Ford Laser.

It had root spikes 2 feet long sticking out of it.

I trimmed it to 35KG before mounting it onto the lathe for turning.

I did see the bowl recently. It survived a divorce and a second marriage and still held pride of place in one house.

    Cheers

    Tim

I am turning this an Knox Wood workers on the big vicmark lathe. My lathes are to small. Although this little one only missed out by 10 mm on one point fitting on my Jet middy lathe. There are big chucks at Knox so no worries holding the bigger pieces.

I will try the 75mm velcro sandpaper on the drill thanks Skew. I have been inventing in my mind a mini ROS about that big with a curved face. How to make curved sand paper could be tricky.

    Tea Lady,

You are doing a wonderful variety of turnings. I am most impressed with your design & workwomanship.

As to sanding, one of these:

Or these with bristles cut off and double sided foam tape applied:

    will save fingers. More Variations:

I found myself wondering if I could stick sand paper to a vibrator. Would the bloke in the sex shop believe my excuse?

I'd start off small and work up in size.

Like I mean, you wouldn't want a large vibrator to get loose in the workshop would you?

I'd start off with a battery operated toothbrush and work up from there.

    Cheers

coveting one of these now. Can't see them in Australian suppliers. Air tool so I'd need a compressor too. Which I can use at Knox Woodworkers until I get my own. Have a few things I could use it on. ( I know where you get the little round spongy pads on sticks now. ) http://vinceswoodnwonders.com/drills...ders/#comments If I ship one in who else would like one?

I don't think those sanders are Random orbital. Also the Grex one has 1 inch pads as well, and extension bars. And an angled handle so the air hose isn't in you way.
