    Default Meranti for staircase?

    Hi
    I’m having a staircase made and wanted to use meranti wood. Had some feedback that meranti is not durable enough to handle the stress of a staircase. Was recommended Mahogany but that would be considerably more expensive.

    Any input appreciated.

    If you can pick through the stack and select the good heart wood boards and not the soft fiberey looking sapwood boards then they would be as hard as mahogany. It was even used as a mahogany substitute. There are about half a dozen woods all lumped under that name. It is also quite stable movement wise.
    The good boards look pretty good.

    My only comment - we (in AUS) don't really know what Sudanese timbers might be available or how they'd really stack up (how they're processed etc). Given the OP notes their location as Sudan, I'd be concerned our view would not be overly relevant. I'd trust the locals more than us (no commentary on you Orraloon )

    It does get used for stairs here in Australia but as pointed out the Meranti as we know it could be very different to what you get over there
    i would seek some local advice as it will be more relevant to you
