Mini Lathe
Hi,
Toying with the idea of a mini wood lathe to turn very small parts for wooden toys. Steering wheels, wheels, pegs etc. Have no need for a larger format device. Will something like the attached picture be suitable Or are these just a gimmick?
Cheers

If that is all you want to do, I would just use a drill. Clamp drill down to a board and add tool rest to suit the job.
Added note: Some use their drill press to do something similar, but working horizontally is more flexible IMO. Don't forget to wear eye protection!Stay sharp and stay safe!

STOP! These are available on Ebay for less then $60 including postage so definitely don't pay $140. Just search mini wood lathe on Ebay. Also check out this review Youtube Should You Buy A $40 Mini Lathe? - Mini Lathe Review - YouTube. Doesn't look good.

Hi Draconus, I purchased one of those lathes to turn pens. It worked fine for that. I probably made about 50 pens. I haven't used it for a while, but till get it outa the cupboard again one day.

I would go with this route. Membuat Mini Lathe | Mesin Bubut Mini - YouTube
This is made of metal, not needed for wood turning of small parts. The headstock can be a large block of hardwood. A 4x4 about 6" high drilled for a bearing in the outboard and inboard side. A long bolt that us threaded to hold a drill chuck fir the spindle. Bearings to fit the bolt. Motor, I think you can find a motor like the one on eBay. Look for models 895 or 795 DC motor. There are also motor controllers, power supply units and just about everything else that is needed to create a great unit.
If I was not in my 70's I would make the metal version. Add a tailstock and make it dual use, both metal and wood lathe. The lathe ways can be purchased, they are linear rails for a 3D printer available on eBay. It would be a kickass machine. Look at the YouTuber's other videos, he makes RC models cars.
