Thread: Mulberry colour change.

Yes its dramatic and often disappointing. Not sure if this post implies ...why does this happen?

Some woods oxidise on exposure to light and some by oxygen (air). Barriers / coatings may slow down this change but rarely stop the process. It the chemistry ie its the chemicals in the wood that change colour. This wood like many (eg Osage Orange) darkens, whereas others bleach (become washed out)

It happens to lots of woods like Euge said. I always expext my turnings to darken a bit with time. I have used mulberry for quite a few tool handles as well as my vice handle. They have darkened a bit but none are near that dark. Mind you all the bits I have used came from the one tree. It is still a handsome bowl even at that colour.

Oh no, I'm quite happy with the colour, just thought it was interesting, and maybe instructive for people colour matching or using the dreaded woodfiller. Phil

Hi phil , I like the colour , looks good , nice bowl well done

I much prefer 2019 version. I wonder what it will look like in another 2 years
