Nova Scroll Chuck jaw compatibility
Hi all,
I have a Nova scroll chuck (the original type model) with only the standard jaws that came with it. Are the Nova jaws currently available for the more recent type Nova chucks also compatible with my old Nova scroll chuck? I was specifically looking at the pin jaw set but it would be handy to know what others are compatible.
Regards

PS I did check the Teknatool website which stated that all jaws were compatible with older chucks but being a cynical and suspicious bugger I decided to check first with others who may have first hand experience with the Nova scroll chuck.

If by original type you mean the small chuck that uses two breaker bars for locking (aka Midi chuck), then yes, most of the jaws - if not all - for the G3 & Supernova models should fit.
I say "most" because the latter chucks are more substantial and while some of their larger jaws will physically fit the Midi, the Midi isn't really rated to handle the loads those jaws are capable of gripping.
Of course, there's nothing to say you can't use those jaws with light loadings... although other jaws would normally be better suited then.

Hi Skew
Its just called the 'Nova scroll chuck' according to the manual, it's just shy of 100mm diameter and was their original model introduced about 1988 (I think). It has a 'C' type spanner and a post with knob on the end to lock the chuck. Its only because it is a near 30 years old model that has me wondering about compatibility with the jaws made for later model Nova chucks.
Thanks

Yep. That's the type.
There's been some minor variations over the years, my oldest Midi has two breaker bars rather than the one and a c-spanner and is tapped for a specific spindle only while later ones were tapped to take spindle adapters.
Even so, I've used all of my Teknatool jaws on it at one stage or another.
I'm pretty sure they originally made the jaws to be compatible with Record and Coronet(? I think) brand chucks, way back when so the mount pattern has become pretty much a standard for them.
Apart from those minor body changes, until fairly recently they were still being made to the same specs and marketed with the desktop and small lathe market in mind.

Thanks Skew, thats good news, it's safe for me to order a set.
The scroll chuck came with an old TL1000 I picked up second hand some years back. I don't actually have the original Post or C spanner but I have been thinking about making one for the past 6 or 7 years. I've been using a dodgy home made solution of two old bolts filed round at the end to match the holes in the chuck. The manual refers to them as ''Body Handle' and 'Scroll Operating Lever & Knob for Operating Lever'. When you referred to breaker bars it threw me a bit as I was thinking of the large pry bars we use on farm machinery.

In addition to the advice from Skew, the exception is the Infinity jaw sets, which came and went, but would need an adaptor to fit on regular Nova chucks.
Stay sharp and stay safe!
