My guess would be a sewing kit. The end on the right of the pic comes off and is a thimble, while the needles are stored inside.
The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.

You Have either done a great job at hiding the join if not then I suspect it is a handle for plastic shopping bags used in the supermarkets. If there is a join then a sewing kit holder

That was my first thought when I saw it too, Digger. You put the plastic bag(s) onto the grooved bits so that they don't cut into your fingers when carrying a heavy load, and they don't rip as often. Where did you find it Jonzjob?

A little line burned around on the join with a wire and it almost disappears.. Yes it's a sewing kit and it also holds 3 different threads. I can't remember where I got the idea from, but there's at least one of them in Aussy 'cause I sent one to my sister..

Really nice to do. This is another bit of Russian olive finished with a Liberon wax stick if I remember correctly?

Ive made two similar lately called travel mates mine only had the thread and needle holders though have to make one with a thimble next . Made for Skewchidam's Mum Vivian and his missus Ann . They use them all the time .
Ps how do you mark this side up on it .
Mine was a PDF from Nova woodworking , care of tea lady https://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/nee...92/index2.html

This side up? Not needed, you just get hold of both ends and pull them apart, then bend down and pick up the spool and needles

No, not really. Once you have it in yer hand it is easy to see which end comes off. I put a smear of silicon rubber on the box end because if you rely on the thimble staying on it either falls off or sticks on depending on weather and tempratures.

The Tea Lady links. I couldn't get 3 of them to work. The Nova one works and I was surprised to see my tractor/trailer plans were the first article on the link! Well worth looking at

If I remember correctly I used a 1/2" forstner bit. That way you get a flat bottom to yer hole. I also drill it before any turning, that way you can make sure that the hole is down the center. If it has wandered slightly you can off set your turning to put it back in the middle again.

The 1/2" hole gives you enough 'meat' at the open end and still makes the thimble a good size.

I look forward to seeing the Christmas pressies. They will be well received I'm sure..
