Pear Hollowform
Have not shown anything here for a while, so here’s a recent effort. This log was given to me by a friend of a friend, who got it from an arborist friend of his. So if this piece had a name, it would be “Friends”. The tree was said to be a “cooking pear” tree. Been working on “form” lately (to the exclusion of my usual seg. and stave stuff), trying to use the “rules”, searching within for any tiny spark of artistic vision. Haven’t found it yet but have learned that if the base diameter looks right on the lathe it will look too big in the picture. Anyhow this one is pith centered, 6” x 9” (152 x 229), with lacquer finish, not yet buffed. Sanded about three times from 80 through 400 to confirm those are growth rings and not tool marks or tearout. Thanks for looking. C & C welcome.

You've done an excellent job there Richard.
I think the form is excellent and the finish also.

Fine piece of turning, Richard, and Mother nature gets a kiss on the cheek for the tree.

Nice work Richard.
And, yes, the base will tend to look too small on the lathe until you take it off and sit it upright. One of the things you discover when turning enclosed forms.
.....Stay sharp and stay safe!

Thanks again for your comments. Maybe can get one more small piece from this log. It was still slightly moist so I completely sealed the outside before starting the hollowing. There was some slight warping but no cracks.
