Ho Hum, another dull and boring Prossie Turnout where I was forced to watch and learn from some of the most talented woodturners on earth who show and share all their techniques and skills without reservation.
Meeting Neil and watching him work was a real eyeopener for me, and checking everyones home made/modified tools to do some extraordinary work is a bonus. As for the age of the participants, the photos so far did not capture the younger ones, but as other posters have said, they are trying to do other stuff. I won a nice blank of timber i have never seen before, so that was a plus from the super raffle, and i gained a few kilo's from the superb food.
All in all, a very well organised, well run event, just hope I am here for next year.
    rgds,
    Crocy.

Been perusing the pictures, what strikes me is....why is there no young people there? One guy looks like he may be under 50 years old, but that's about it. Not that 50 was ever considered young.
Any young folk (say under 30) woodturning these days?

Over 50? All 21 at heart and a great bunch of friends to catch up with again. Not exactly sure but from early to mid thirties (how old is Troy??) to 90 yo represented in this years group. Last couple of years we have had from early 20's up to 89.

A very good weekend - great company; great food thanks to Kay & her merry helpers; great barman - thanks Ray; and a very well run event all up. Its a pity we only have it once a year as there is just so much to learn and watch under the big top.

Thanks for some great photos Neil.
Could you maybe explain how you make the leg jonts in your spider? Maybe in a new thread.
I tried this once but had no joy.

    I was there and I'm 44!
I think Troy was the youngest. There was also Mark from Illbilbi. He must be early 40s.

Katrina could not make it this year, she's 22.

    Cheers

Easier to show in person than describe . I start with a 6mm sq blank held with pin jaws in the Vicmarc chuck and use a cone live centre in the tailstock at the blunt end. I turn them round with a ball at the headstock end. Done very carefully with very sharp small skew or detail gouge and steady hand. Sand and finish before parting off. The cone centre makes a matching hole that then can be fitted against the ball and glued in place.

Mango is not a timber to learn on, it was a PITA, ebony or any other very fine straight grained timber is best. To make the 18 leg parts I actually started with 57 blanks for this one, fiddle or twisted grain soon put an end to the others

Thanks Neil. That makes sense.I was trying to drill a little hole in the ball to fit the other bit into.

This was my contribution to the mango wood challenge. It was another excellent week end of renewing acquaintances and telling little porkies as well as learning a few new tricks.

Hi Smiife, The lid is not hinged, just held open with a piece of wire. What is it used for?????? It falls into the same category as the photos or paintings hanging on a wall. The red thing inside was going to be aa rose, but the wood wasn't suitable for thin petals so it became a daisy.

    Default proserpine turnout

With the help of the Mackay club the turnout will continue to be staged. We as woodies have to do all we can to ensure that it continues. The Bowen woodies are prepared to give the mackay club some help even if it is from a small group of older blokes.

I am also very thankful for the Mackay boys getting this years Turnout up and running. Both my wife and I look forward every year, to meeting up with distant friends. However, I think we should all get behind Con and his merry little band of men, and be grateful and thankful that they, a very small group, had the foresight and gumption to start this event. It is a demanding exercise and take a lot of time and energy to maintain enthusiasm.

I for one, have had some experiences and met some people, that I would not have had or met before. Credit to the Mackay Club, they did a sterling job, but I did miss the boys from Proserpine.

Hopefully we can all meet again next year at Camp Kanga. I will most certainly assist in any way I can.
