    Default First recessed bowl

    Good evening all!

I turned my first bowl to have a recess today (3rd bowl ever). Quilted Red Gum approx 135mm diameter x 40mm deep.

Any comments or advice on the form or anything else would be appreciated. Personally I think the recess is too wide for this bowl, and it's certainly looking too deep. Is there a general rule on how deep a dovetail recess usually needs to be for a decent hold? I have a Nova G3 chuck with the standard 50mm jaws.

Generally speaking if your going to use your chuck in an expansion mode you will need to have a decent recess and this will vary depending the timber your turning. So the depth would about what the recess is on the jaws

On the other hand what is often more common is to use your chuck in contraction and turn a spigot on the bottom that is removed later. This method is often more secure than expansion as it will work on any timber.

Thanks hughie. I think I will go down that track after buying cole jaws to remove the foot of the turned bowls.

Does doing this and using cole jaws limit the shape of the front exterior edges of the bowls?

Look up 'Donut Chuck' or 'Longworth Chuck' and make your own, or buy another nova chuck make your own cole jaws as well.
