Thread: record cl2 help

Hi I have a CL3 Record lathe and eventually I'll be upgrading to variable speed drive. As for you regarding changing from 3 speed to 5 speed pulley I would recommend that you change to the variable speed control instead of changing the pulley to a 5 speed. Trying to get better results by changing pulley is difficult when one doesn't have the right equipment; where as upgrading the lathe with the variable speed control is the best outcome and overall the cheapest outcome. Especially if you damage parts trying to change from a 3 speed pulley to a 5 speed pulley.

Cheers alby for the info I'm pretty sure I have seen the variable speed upgrade unit around the $900 mark whats the price range you have found .

Is there room for a wider pulley? Do you need slower speed or higher speed, or both? Can you do the dis-assembly and re-assembly?

Pulleys can be bought from an engineers shop or an electrical motor shop. Remove the pair that you have and take them to buy the new ones.

If there is not room for a 5 groove set, a 4 groove might do.

If there is not room for a 4 groove set, changing the size of the 3 groove set may get you higher or lower sets of speeds while sacrificing the opposite speeds.

Doing what you have in mind can sometimes be time consuming and a bit fiddly, but if you persist going from supplier to supplier with your pulleys, you will eventually find the right ratios with the right bores to fit your motor and spindle.

You would have to be dead lucky to find a pair of 5 step pulleys off the shelf that would fit without some machining.

If you were lucky and did manage to find some, it would still be a PITA to change belts all the time.

Better off to go down the EVS road, making sure there is room for the new motor.

This system could be transferred should you decide to upgrade, or you could buy a bare lathe at a later date.

Your quite right the price is around the $1000.00 mark; as for the pulleys it is the fact that you would have to supply your headstock shaft to a machine shop to make a 5 step pulley to suit.
Now that Hare & Forbes stock Record machinery have you considered contacting them as to whether or not they can supply you with a set of Record 5 step pulleys to suit your Lathe rather than getting a machine shop to make a set of pulleys to suit your lathe.

Cheers for all info guys that's a good idea asking h&f for the 5 step pulleys also I had a yarn with a mate who's a sparky and he suggested maybe a variable speed motor from an industrial fan might do the trick ,any thoughts to this idea would be great ..

I have a different model Record lathe (DML 24) that I had changed to variable speed using a half horse motor, the new motor mounted on to my base and the spindle from my old motor was fitted to the new one, as I had chucks and other fittings I decided to go to the effort. It was three years ago. On the higher speed pulley the speed will go from 400- 3200 I have been pleased with the way it worked out. You might want a bigger motor,
