Red mallee burl bowl
Had two goes at this one. It had a kwila 'collar' on it, that seemed to get a bit 'lost'. Cut that one off and made a new one out of yellow walnut. I think it looks a bit better. It measures 190mm diameter and 100mm high. The first two photos are of the 'new' bowl', number three is the original. It was originally finished with numerous coats of Danish oil, after sanding back it was given three spray coats of lacquer. Look ok now.

Looks really wonderful
Well worth the effort to put the yellow walnut on... as for the Mallee Burl...really beautiful piece of wood.
Apart from the closeness of colour of the original top, I think the segmentation of the layer does not really go well with the mallee burl.... So a good choice to change it in my opinion.

Chipman

Great job Jim, the Walnut looks much better. That extra rim of darker timber also sets it off.
Is that rim also Red Mallee, and is it segmented?Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Yes Jim, I agree, the fist collar got lost, it was not really bad, but after you cut it off, and made a new yellow walnut color it looks now super !!
Great job, keep them coming.

Thanks for the nice words folks. The trim on top of the walnut is actually a ring of red cedar veneer two mm thick. That too was an after thought. Didn't look quite right without it. The original laminated top was left over from another job. Doesn't pay to take short cuts does it? Stay tuned, it probably will turn up again somewhere on another job..

G'day Jim... I like 'em both. Seems like the first one is a bit more subdued, and classy, too. But then I'm a queeky sort... been told I don't have much taste sometimes.

Jim I think it looks great with any top. I was drawn to the bowl rather than the top but I do understand why you swap it.Cheers Rum Pig
