Restoring a Morgan steering wheel wood rim.
A mate dropped around last year with a dead plus 4 Morgan on his trailer.
Very sad but a good retirement project as Jeff has owned a Morgan since we did our time together in the late 60s. The steering wheel was cactus from weather, wood falling apart and the Al very corroded. Jeff has helped me with my plus 4 so I offered to make him a new steering wheel.
Anyhu he rings me last Wednesday and having retired to Cootamundra needs to move the dead MOG and needs the steering wheel to steer it on/off the trailer etc.
Of course being slack it had ended up under stuff and been forgotten.
So I thought I’ll just do a quick job on the old one with whatever is in the stash.
Being rather allergic to rooters I did it on the lathe.
Two sets of 6 segments glued with urethane.
Rebate and round over on front with just roundover on back.
Glued together with West epoxy on a rough jig.
Hand and lathe sanded to 220.
Fingergrips rasped on back.
It came out ok but I will be telling him not to drive enthusiastically with this as the Al was corroded to half it’s thickness on the rim in spots.
Glad I did this as once the guys are back at my old work I’ll get a few Al centres waterjet cut out and make him a decent wheel and one for mine.

looking good
Temporary or not looks a darn fine job to me. The Ali parts shouldnt be too hard to duplicate as log as the hub is ok. There some very good ali welding rods out these days that do a great job just using mapp gas
