    Default Rocketship Mark IV

Spend most of my time over in the toy making forum. Thought I would post one of my rocketships. This is Rocketship Mark IV. It is made up of 22 pieces to make the body. Spent the first day gluing everything up. Turned the main body this afternoon. Comments good and bad welcome.

All the pieces cut to size. Made my own Mahogany venner. .016 thick.

    Mocked up.

Nose and tail section glued to main body and ready for turning.

Final shape and sanded to 220.

Haven't been turning very long. Still learning the tools, techinques and sharpening.

Thanks for looking. More to come.

Will do sir. Have to make an indexing jig for the chuck and also a tool rest for my drill to do the next part.

Look forward to see what else you are going to do to it Bret. Also interested in how you make the jig.

Can't wait to see it complete

I like the shape and I like the lines (mahog.). Reminds me so much of the illustrations in kids' SF books from my childhood. Top choice.
Best of all, you can show me that a $5,000 lathe isn't really necessary.

Thank you. My lathe was free! It belonged to my Grandpa. My Uncle had it in storage for 25 years and one day decided he was never going to use it. And my favorite part it was made in the USA in 1939

    Thank you Derek.

I got the 2 jigs made I needed. They were quick and dirty but will get the job done.

First on is a indexing jig for my chuck. I was going to make one that used the backside of the chuck when I realized the outside had indexing as well and a 1/8" drill bit fit perfect. So it doesn't get any simpler than that.

Second one is for drilling holes. Just a simple platform that fits in my tool rest.

Derek now you can see what is next.

    Thanks for looking.

Got a little bit more done today. It is hot again today hitting triple digits. Spent about an hour and half and I had enough. Plus going this afternoon to get some parts for the 64'. Bottom brackets for the in cab gas tank.

I used both the jigs I made and successful drilled the holes for the rivets around the top and bottom.

I also sanded it to 600 grit. You can see the sheen in this pic.

I then cutoff some brass pins and glued them in. These pins are a few decades old. I bought them in a big box of stuff at a garage sell. They have some patina on them.

Next up is making the fins and the rocket engine.

Yes sir I did. Actually finished it about this time last year. I took almost a whole year to complete.

    Here is the build thread

And a shot. The boiler was the first thing I turned on my lathe.

Sorry Derek haven't had time to make the case for the train. I need to so I can get it out of the woodshop and into my office.

Made some progress on the Rocketship

Next up nose cone and a clear finish.
