rosewood vase
hi guys ,finally finished this rosewood vase,[with a little help
from my friends ]looked for the old thread, but it must have been
quite a while ago,so just started another new one,
you might or might not remember the piece was given to me
and the owner asked if i could make something for his wife for
xmas,he wanted a female shape,a piece of the original timber
some where to put a flowerpot,i think it ticks all the boxes
and this is the journey from the start,i had never turned anything
of this size before,so firstly cut it down to fit on my lathe then
attacked it with the arbortec ,turned the rough shape, then had a visit
from a prominent wood turner???? who certainly brought the whole thing
to life, here are some photos of the process, hope i am not repeating any?
delivered the vase today and he seems happy with the result just
waiting on the verdict from the missus
ps.
not too sure why the photos are out of whack
but i think you get the drift of the process
also not sure who that bloke is in the last two piccy;s
cheers smiife
the first 4 photos should be the last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Last edited by smiife; 18th December 2013 at 09:12 PM. Reason: adding explaination of photos

Beautiful piece of timber, well turned and finished.
Not so sure about the shape. I wonder if the base is broad enough
to keep it balanced when the vase contains decorations!

It certainly came up very nice & it looks like you learned a a fair bit about how to handle a cantankerous bit of wood with splits & all. Nice work with assistance from the master.
Please don't be offended but I would dice the lathe steady at least for large spindle items like this one. It may be OK on thin balusters but is just too lightly built to be effective on this size blank and would be dangerous with out tail stock support.

Nice work there, a real beauty.
Why did you use the Arbortec, instead of roughing down on the lathe.
I tend to agree that your lathe steady does look a bit dicey. Maybe something simple like I made (post 2) would be better which is rock solid as once clamped on the lathe I can not move it.

that lathe steady was found to be useless i have since made a mk2 and mk3
and i always had the tail stock support until i hollowed the top out
thanks for your comments
i used the arbortec ,because it was there and had never used one before
when you send me another piece of rosewood 1000mm x 200mm x 200mm
thanks to everyone for there comments very much appreciated
cheers smiife

it's a great piece! Will we be seeing bigger turnings in the future? it's amazing what knowledge Mr has, and for beginners to absorb all the information must be daunting at times. because when he was here he mentioned things and I was think Damn forgot about doing that must get that sorted!

Very nice Mike!!!
The shape is very elegant. 's eye enhanced your original shape. Great collaboration of talents. Its very easy to get away from correct shape when you have found the "sweet spot" with a tool. I know many a time things have come out a mile under size due to getting carried away. I hope the recipient appreciates the angst that you put in.
Merry ChristmasJust do it!
Kind regards Rod
