    Default RZ Dust Mask

I have just seen an advertisement in Australian Woodworker for the RZ dust mask. Like most dust masks they are multi fuctional and not specifically designed for woodworking. I made inquiries to RZ because I was keen to have them in my shop but wanted to test one first. They are a great concept and comfortable but didn't pass the fog-the-glasses test or, being a woodturner, fog-the-face mask test. I won't be stocking them.

Yup if you wear glasses it would be very difficult to wear your glasses at the same time. Bit of design issue that could easily overcome with a slight mod I think. I like the concept its likes it would be comfortable to use, but as you say not strictly suitable for wood dust.

I use P2 as a minimum and have been looking for a better one/style/type than I use currently. As I spend half my time finishing on most pieces.

I am some what surprised Brendan. I have tried many types over the years, settling on Dust-be-gone types for quite a while, until I found the RZ. I now have had 2 of their masks for quite a few years and think they are the best on the market for a simple mask. They certainly passed the test for fog-the-glasses and fog-the-mask tests for me, and numerous other people that have bought them, based on my recommendation. Mind you I haven't worn them in ice cold conditions down your way but they were fine at Philip Island. I also believe they are the only mask I can continuously wear without issues.

Dust-be-gone, (I think) filters out 5 microns. That is plain useless.

The mask I use is the Ellipse P100. It filters down to 0.03 microns ..

It is quite cheap ($25 USD) but you need to order one from Highland Woodworking in the USA.

Comfortable and does not fog specs.

I use the RZ and have no issues with fogging, but then again I am in a more temperate climate and shed

I see Timberly Woodturning in NZ also sell the Elipse mask if you wanted to purchase from somewhere closer to home.

I think you mean 0.3 microns - well that's what it says on the Ellipse P100 spec site.

The claimed efficiency of filtration is 99.97% at >0.3 microns
All P2 rated masks are required to be at least 94% at 0.3 microns but the ones I have measure were all >99.8% at >0.3 microns.
They were probably even better than this but that was about my limit of measurement at the time.

What is not understood is the efficiency rating is only for the filter media itself and does not take into account fitting around the face.
When this is considered the the rated efficiency can be all over the place.
A mask with a poorer filter efficiency may well be more efficient overall when fitting is taken into consideration.

After reading a few of the more favourable comments I had another go at wearing the RZ mask. Now the weather is warmer I thought it could be better on the fogging of glasses issue. Better, yes but still fogging the glasses. I am very suprised that there are those that think these masks don't fog. It must be the shape of my nose!

I'm yet another RZ mask user and I have not had any fogging of the glasses issues even under a face shield or a welding shield. Maybe its too dry in Adelaide for fogging LOL
