How Would You Make A Segment Bowl - Without xxxxxx......

 I have been thinking of making a segment bowl for a little while now. I have been watching a few videos of what segment turners are doing to create these and it seems that the majority are using a table saw with a sled to do the cutting.

My table saw is a Triton and the sled that I created for the Triton is only going to give me 90 degree cuts that also seem to have a tendency of producing cuts at 88 degrees. It can be a little bit of a hit and miss but the larger pieces can be true up with a handplane, not so with the shorter pieces. I should also mention that I do not own any powered sanders, weather that be fixed or hand held.

I have been thinking that the segmented pieces that I create will be more informal than exacting.

With this limitation in mind what would people suggest in order to create a segment piece.

I've been taking a good look at segmented turning myself, reading up and watching vids each night. It looks very interesting and I'm particularly taken by the 'missing segment' stuff.

Do you have a compound mitre saw? I've noticed that many people use that method instead of a table saw to cut segments. I don't have a table saw, so will be going that way myself when I get started.

I'm sure you already know this, but you should be able to sand the segment edges and flatten the ring surfaces using sandpaper glued to a flat surface. I have a sheet of perspex with 80g W&D glued to it for that type of thing.

Firstly I'd prefer to pack all my bits in a box and send the to FNQ to Powderpost/Jim and let him cut n glue them leaving me to just turn them.

Christos did you sell you BS? Doesn't it have a tilting table? you could make or get a mitre set up for it a decent fence etc. I know BS needs a decent blade and tune up I bet

I've heard you love hand sanding small blocks.

I have done some small cut n glue blocks n the past nothing fancy but a Belt sander does help............or you can make up a disc sander face plate for the lathe and a table at centre height this I did prior the belt sander on the Jet Mini and of course you can set the speed. Glue I used PVA, Epoxy and CA on various trys have found all to be good.

I sold the miter saw because I was not using it and was just taking up a lot of space. I do have a bandsaw and use that all the time for the odd quick cuts, can get a bit rough on the cuts.

Segmenting requires a degree of self discipline, dedication and reliable gear. Segments can be cut using an adjustable mitre box or a dedicated wooden mitre box, either way you will need a good, sharp hand saw. The segmenting fraternity is generally evenly split between powered mitre saws and bench saws fitted with sleds. Either way they must be accurate and consistent. If the cuts are accurate then a quick rub on a sandpaper board will be enough. My sand paper boards are made from 19mm ply with about 450mm of 250mm floor 80# sanding sandpaper glued on. Clamping of the rings will need a variety of band clamps, (the type that used to be used on radiator hoses) is best.

Open segmenting is much slower and does require a high degree of accuracy and patience. Spacing of the segments evenly is a challenge in itself. Each block needs to be glued individually, then there is the problem of cleaning up the glue between the segments.

Band saws can be used but the machine needs to be fine tuned with a very good sharp blade fitted. A disc sander is almost a must. Handling small bits of timber on powered machinery is fraught with danger. To use up little bits of wood for segmenting is not a good idea. A 500 or 600mm length of 19mm x 12mm is a different proposition.

That is the down side, the up side is tremendous satisfaction.

There is a couple of WIP's of segmented project I have done that were noted in a recent post here last week. They may help. Feel free to ask a specific question if you like.

I've Made a few Jigs set at different angles to suite my Band Saw, "See Pics" I set the angle with a screw then when I reach the wright Angle I glue and screw together.

You guys have given me some ideas. I am not sure I can get a good clean cut on the bandsaw but will give it a try to see if I can incorporate segments in a turned piece. Maybe the top of the bowl.

Christos, I spotted this the other day and it's got some good tips, so thought you might be interested if you haven't read it already.
(Won't help with actually cutting the segments though - he uses a table saw.)
