Ted,
A thread started by tea lady 9/11/2014 was headed "So how do others do those shaftless...." In that thread there is a reply from dai sensei with links to two lots of instructions. Both of those links still work (I checked) so worth a look and hopefully provide what you're after.
Cheers, Gary H

Have a look at Piet Smiths website and PowerPoint presentations . He has done these demos at just about every conference of the Association of Woodturners of South Africa (AWSA)

I never use the recess anymore on any of my pepper grinders as I've had them come lose on the Aussie hardwoods (spinning) and always epoxy them in. Word of warning though on the shaftless mechanism if gluing them in, be very very careful with regard to what surfaces you put the epoxy on, to make sure you don't push any epoxy into the mechanism. Nothing worse than spending hours on a pepper grinder to find you've glued the 2 parts together instead of the 2 parts to the mechanism, don't ask me how I know this.
