Really only the intersecting edges need to be done, as already mentioned. I went further because it was easier in the long run for me to do it that way. I am on a learning curve with turning tools and don't mind admitting it. If I have done too much then it is no big deal, it certainly has not done any harm and I have identified the areas of the tool that I need to be careful of when sharpening.
It is easier to lap the length I did than to work on one spot. I also thought I may as well do it now rather than later when I had ground it back past the lapped part.

More pics from the weekend
For those that missed the little Sharp-On at 's place, here are a few pics to whet your appetite.
We had plenty of spare time, so Ken gave us a great 30 minute demo on turning a lidded box out of (I think) dead finish. (I might add that the Kitchen Quality Controller, AKA Helen said to bin the product).
Some here are a few of Ken at work in close up.

Here's the final box. It's maybe 100mm tall, 40mm wide. Given the conditions - a dodgy toolrest on the lathe, make-do lighting, I was most impressed. I have it at home and I will try to copy it soon:

And also some happy snaps of the attendees:

To those lurkers in Melbourne that didn't show up, you missed heaps. Two of the best Australian turners (albeit coming from different ends of the spectrum) were on hand and ready to help.
What a great weekend.

Jeff, you could have told me you were going to take close up photos, I would have cleaned my nails.

Jeff, it was nice to meet you and Ann, you are both welcome at our place anytime. Glad you liked my collection of fire wood.
I also learnt a lot at the weekend: Never follow directions, given by .
Don't listen, when says he has everything that I need.
Thanks for a great weekend, Helen and I had a good time.

Good point, Jim.
I would encourage both and Ken W to post some pics of what they do - alternate ends of the scale.
Both are inspirational. (I've spent some hours trying to explain to people the size of 's lathe, but they don't get it. Problem solved. Pics taken on the weekend of the long bed lathe and some 4 foot pieces. Same with Ken's stuff.)
I wouldn't dare post the images without permission though, so I implore them both to share. It's not a question of bragging.
As told me earlier today, this forum brings people together from all over the place. Interstate and overseas visitors. And perhaps more importantly, from those just around the corner.

I thought it a bit harsh to criticise him for not having a spare Stubby or two to play with... especially considering the theme was "sharpening."
An extra white-board marker or six would've helped avoid the fossicking through the sawdust though. After all, that happens at every meet.

Post away Jeff. I very rarely take photos but I do have some that my clients have taken.
It is a bit of an in joke about the Stubby.
Ken asked if he needed to bring anything and I said just bring your tools and Tormeks to show how you sharpen them and one thing led to another and you know the rest.
Those bloody white board markers are like pencils; the fairies pinch them.
