I Like the grain, and the SO asked why the bowl I did today doesn't look like it!

Nice bowl, How big is it? Mock Orange around here is a bush, Ive got a Mock Orange root ball out back curing up (because I don't have time to do anything in the shop) from removal of a 20 year old bush, last year. I havent cut into it but it is more white than your's. Perhaps we are speaking of different species. 1/2 a world apart.

Good color and slick finish (what is the finish?)

G'day Griz - I reckon it's Osage Orange, pretty well seasoned too by the colour of it.

Colour can vary from below and darker, through bright yellow to pretty bland washed out brown like yours. Grain also can go from very bland to amazingly figured.


The one thing most of it has in common is that the grain almost invariably has great depth and flashes lights like opal when polished well.

The bowl is 150 mm x 55mm. It was off the end of a slab that had a check in it. Thought I'd try it out to see how it would turn. Lovely wood to work with, originally, I thought it was a couple of slabs of cypress pine, didn't take a very close look. Got 2 slabs for $20 and a heap of thinner Osage Orange (I'll use that name now along with about 20 + cypress posts for another $100 (I won't mention all the garbage wood that came with it and has now gone to a friend's fire). The finish is 2 coats of Shellawax Cream with a buff of EEE in between. Piece was sanded to 1200 grit first. Again, thanks for the comments. Makes me feel that I might be starting to get the hang of this .
