Default Silky Oak Pot Pourri Bowl

    Well here it is!

After much hesitation, deliberation and perspiration
this is my first attempt at a bowl of any description.

A mate gave me the blank which was odd shaped and
of irregular thickness. It had a giant knot within plus
fractures all over the place. The safest thing would have
been to put the tomahawk to it and get some firewood.

However, being the supreme optimist, I persisted with
it making sure my protective headgear remained on at
    all times.

The result: It looks a bit like a bowl and gives me some
encouragement to find a decent quality blank and try
    again in future.

Great start Allan! It's still in one piece so that bodes well for your bowl-turning future! Doesn't look very deep??? - ah well next one eh!

Mate, can't see anything wrong with that.

You'll end up refining your form and technique with the next few bowls, (it is only yer first after all ) but it looks like you've sussed out the parts that most people screw up on the first try: sizing the rebate for the lid so it fits nicely and finishing the inside.

    Howdy all,
Thank you for your comments which I have taken on board
and subsequently had another go at it.
I borrowed the appropriate chisel from a friend and deepened
the bowl considerably. It revealed a rough looking "butterfly"
as a result of cutting into a much larger knot.
It is still a rough looking bowl with original cracks but overall
    I am happy.

    Thanks for looking

    Allan

Once the timber is properly dry.... I supose it is the cracks wont move much so its worth filling them with some resin or CA.

I've tried white shelac on a few things like this lately and been very pleased with the result.
I use it realy thin & let it soak in.... several coats & sand.. some wax over.

    you won't know it.

    interesting shape.

    cheers

    Hmmm... how artistic are you?

A bit of work on the knot, filling with a dark-stained resin perhaps, and the odd detail with a brush could leave a rather realistic moth inside your bowl...
