Yep, I agree, Anne-Maria, I am surprised I have managed to show something new to do with woodturning. It had me wondering where I got this technique from. I have been using it for quite a while and I have demonstrated it at various clubs before with similar reactions to that that I have received here. I think I made it up myself because I can't recall anyone showing it to me.
Thanks to all for your feedback. I'm not sure I have too many more of this sort of technique to impress you with.

I use a simular technique.
I insert the flat blade of a skew or scraper between the toolrest and the rotating work.
By pulling the handle towards me it has the same effect.
Just like pulling a beer, which reminds me it's now after 4 pm.
I taught myself this trick after seeing a mate do much the same thing on a metal lathe.
I suspect you would have a bit more control using Brendans method.
Cheers
TimSome days I turns thisaway, somedays I turns thataway and other days I don't give a stuff so I don't turn at all.

Hi Brendan,
Another fantastic tip. I've tried a number of techniques to overcome this problem, sometimes with success, but always taking way too long.
This is such a simple, quick and accurate method.
I assume lathe speed is the only caveat. I'd like to see Jimmy Clewes doing that at 3000 rpm.
Cheers, and thanks again for sharing,
Paul

Another smart idea Brendan. Could have used it truing up our new home made aluminium handles for drilling tool holes.

Brendan,
Not sure if you know, but I liked it so much after seeing it on Woodturner's resource that I shared it on all the US forums. Great idea. I just happened to need to do that with some handles I was making right after I saw it.
