    DaveTTC,

Assuming you have a TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor, the shroud on the end directs the air over the motor body to cool it. Running a long time without the shroud may cook the motor.

I was working my Hegner hard with a big hard bowl blank and it stopped working. Motor was hot, covered with dust and chips. I cleaned it off, turned it on and it ran fine for another two hours. Apparently there is a thermostat inside to shut it down when it gets too hot.

Yours may or may not have the same.
So much timber, so little time.
