Thompson/Jamieson bowl gouge purchase
I'm in the process of purchasing one of these Thompson 10v bowl gouges with a more parabolic flute profile to Lyle Jamieson's specifications...
Signature Jamieson Grind Bowl Gouge - Unhandled - Lyle Jamieson Woodturning
Doug Thompson has made V and U flutes, but not parabolic. This one can only be purchased directly from Lyle in the US.
Lyle claims that "it has a wider, parabolic flute shape than any other gouge made today". From what I can see it looks similar to the original Henry Taylor Superflute bowl gouge flute profile, which I like for the finishing cuts inside the bottom of bowls and platters...
I'm only buying one, so if anyone would like to piggy back on my order you are welcome provided you PM me quickly enough.
Things to note:
- It is only available in 5/8" bar width
- The price is in US$, so our cost of purchase would be at the A$/US$ exchange rate on the day.
- Cost of shipping to me will be US$30, split between any other participants
- Import tax is an unknown... most small orders from small suppliers have been getting through tax free, but no guarantee there.
- Your cost for me to send on to you via standard Oz Post satchel
- So, not a cheap gouge when you calculate the exchange rate and extras
- If it is like any of the other gouges that Doug makes there will be milling tracks in the flute that will need to be ground and polished out, like the P&Ns needed.
- I'm expecting to complete my order by early next week, so please PM me over the weekend if interested
Stay sharp and stay safe!

Do you know how long the tool is Neil?. I imagine it does not come with a handle.
I am interested in turning larger size bowls.
Thanks

Artful
They are 300mm long, without a handle, with 180mm of flute. If you are going to be resharpening with a CBN wheel it should last a long time.
I now use quick release handles on all of my BGs, so I would only be discarding their handle if it came with that.
If I am pre-turning green blanks and the diam is more than about 18" I use 3/4" BGs for roughing down. But, depending on how much larger stuff you do, it may not be worth getting a 3/4" BG, which have become quite exxy in a good steel. Once seasoned I re-turn everything with 5/8" BGs.Stay sharp and stay safe!

well worth getting on board with this
I have one from a previous bulk purchase and can recommend the quality, it is my go to gouge most of the time. What we found previously was the more we buy the less we pay . I think in the end the order was over $2000 so we got free shipping, my gouge cost me an even $100
So jump on this its the best way to buy quality a good price, volume is the way to go.
Big bowls no worries I have done a few at 400 and recently 500mm.Last edited by hughie; 2nd July 2022 at 10:23 AM. Reason: forgot title :)

Yes, Hughie, I ran the one back in 2010 when the exchange rate was just on parity with the US$ and we have also had a decade of inflation since then, so no $100 gouges any more!
Just to be clear, this one is not a bulk buy directly from Doug Thompson like the previous ones when there was no Thompson Tools retailer here in Australia. This is just me buying a particular signature gouge from Lyle Jamieson that is made by Doug Thompson for Lyle and only available directly from Lyle... and me being happy to share the cost of combined shipping with anyone else who wants to do the same. This should not breach forum rules about such matters.
There is a Thompson Tools retailer now here in Australia through which we can buy all of Doug's other tools...
