I have a few of Doug's tools and find them equal to my old Glasers. I will admit that Doug is a friend of mine, but I have replaced all my gouges with the Thompson tools.
The tools seem to have a great ability to hold an excellent edge, but I am one who will sharpen very often, even when it may not be needed. It's just my nature.
I would not hesitate to try them out. I know Doug has a money back policy if you are not happy with the tool.
I also should say that I have jumped on his coat tails to provide handles for his tools, but it is easy enough to make your own.
Best wishes,
Dave
