Tool steel comparo
Some interesting data showing relative toughness and abrasion resistance here:

Also note the relatively minor variation in hardness (as fas as I can judge it).Cheers, Ern

Ern - thanks for that pointer. Brent sure does a thorough job!
I have both a Tery Gordon plane with an Acadamy Saw Works blade and a Mujingfang plane. Not sure exactly what vintage they were, but after using them for a few years now I have found them to be both excellent blades. I like the Gordon plane and the Mujingfang is an OK user, but was fantastic value for the unbelievably low number of dollars I paid for it at the time.
Interesting that the Australian made Stanley HSS blade did so well. Wonder how many of those are still sitting around Mitre10 shelves? We seem to be able to make a top blade here when we put our mind to it.
Maybe we need to get Paul Williams (the Acadamy Saw Works blade maker.. although I think he is more independent of them nowadays) to start making some HSS turning tips for us turners.

Glad you found it useful Neil.
Yes, the Muji's are amazing value.
And it would be interesting to know where Paul Williams sourced his steel from (or how he pre-processed it).Cheers, Ern
