What type of timber?
I have just got some timber that was used as a front fence on a property.6"x 2" rails, 8"x 8" posts, old as the hills .
Timber is straight grained,
reddish/brown,no disticntive smell, not quite as heavy as Iron bark. I turned some & polished it with Ubeat Shellawax Cream,it came up really good, great looking grain!
Problem is I dont know what type of timber it is, I want to use it to make some salt & pepper mills, small bowls/dishes etc, but I was wondering about compatability with food.I`m guessing it came from an Australian native trees.Does anyone know of such timbers that you would not use for food items? Thanks in advance
Phil.

Hi Phil,
8 x 8 sounds like a real find!
Are the rails and posts the same timber?
Reddish/brown, could be jarrah. Fence posts are often redgum, but that's pinkish/brown. Redgum endgrain comes up nicely. Both should be OK for food grade items.
Otherwise, see

on this site for wood toxicities.
cheers,

Call it an old fence and see how well it sell it is difficult to to identify the timber unless you have a known sample of a similar timber.

Having been in the bush making fences, a common wood is GreyBox or RedBox etc.
Hope this helps
