urns
urns.jpg A woman asked me to make an Urn for her husband and by chance I had one for myself and one for my wife. I sold my wifes to her for her husband plus she wants one for herself. So I had to make another one for her plus one to replace for my wife. The dark ones are Peruvian walnut and the lighter one is Sapele. I have no idea what wood the small one is. Its for the same womans dog

Nice urns.
I'm interested to know what size they are, what finish you used inside and how the lid is sealed.
Are the urns adequate to hold the ashes required to be a certain volume?
Do they need to be made to a standard?
Thanks
Lyle

There is no finish on the inside. I used ABS fittings for the seal. They are very easy to turn down to just a few threads. I use Woodturner Pro.
It tells me that it is 10-1/2high x 8.39 at the widest point with a total volume of 210.68" based on the inside of the unturned segments. What I found was that 200 is kind of target. That figure will increase as you turn the inside. I also found that you can use rice as a way of checking volume. 1 cup of rice =10 lbs. So if you have 20 cups of rice. I used wheat
Where I live I don't know of any regulation on size or shape
The finish is Shellawax cream

Here's a few I have made, in Aus they ask for 3 litre volume and the crematorium seals the plug with silicone. The small one with the plug is a 1 litre pet size.

For Australia Old Croc has done his homework.
There are no standard regulations but the (lets be blunt here) ashes of a cremated person need to fit into one container ...usually Sometimes though a family will be scattered (no pun intended) around the country or world and they want a share of the ashes.
Other times its simply till family gets together and scatters them at a chosen place.
The hard part for a 'cremation business is presenting timber urns as there are always colour or minor shape preferences. So I like the idea of a family having their chosen urn already purchased so the crem simply has to transfer them into owned urn.
I used to own a pet cremation business and was on call for a human one if when the need arose.I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds
