I take it you are making a chuck for finishing the feet of bowls, and general face plate work etc.
If so here are a couple of hints that could come in handy. Use thick MDF for the backing plate and give it a slightly concaved face this will allow for a better vacuum joint on to the work piece, including flat pieces like bread boards etc. Cover the face of the chuck with meduim density closed cell foam about 10mm thick. This will exclude the air and give a firm bed for the rim of a bowl to sit on whilst being held very securely, even if slightly warped.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Peter.
If you use the household vacuum cleaner make sure that the air vent on the cleaner pipe is slightly open, else you will burn out the motor and mother or wifey will not be pleased!
