Now this is a little strange. Picked this up from a friend in log form as Black Walnut. But.... as you can see its not that yes very m walnutty and perhaps its closer to Silky Oak. Except that its much harder than Silky Oak plus the colour is all over the place and it has moved na great deal more so than all the SO i have on hand.
S is there some variety of SO that much harder than the rest?

Hah looks like I have answered my own post.
Well managed to contact the source . Apparently its one of the Sheoaks . It come form along the banks of the Murrumbidgee river common names River Sheoak, River Oak, Creek Oak, Fire Oak. or Casuarina cunninghamiana subsp. cunninghamiana. A much sort after species by knife makers.
    But thanks for looking

Yes, similar to the forest and river oak up here near Wauchope. If only the darn stuff didn't split like it does! But that's why forest oak was popular for shingles, easy to split.

    Default Welcome back!

    Welcome back Hughie.

It's been so long since you have posted here that I thought you might have dropped off the perch or somehow otherwise gone missing in action.

Anyway, it's good to have you back in the fray!
