Thanks, David. It certainly looks to be an intriguing biy of kit.

I think I'll wait until I can see one in person before I try to replicate it though... and I suspect it'll be quite a while before I head out Eildon way.

The first picture the top edge is on the tool rest and the point does the hollowing, the bottom edge of the groove stops it from digging in too fast.
The point is only past the bottom edge of the groove by 1-2 mm.

The second picture the chisel is turned over, top edge on tool rest and this is the scraper.
I hope all this jargon is clear and gives you the idea how it works.

This chisel was made by the Eildon Woodworkers, they make lathe chisels of all sorts and sell them at woodwork displays / activities

David. A pic from the end at an angle would be nice a Isometric view perhaps

cool. Only bits of wood still, but black. Black wood went .....black. Eucalypt burl went all crushed velvet looking. Have to do something with that. Currently hatching a plan.

David, I blocked down that monster piece of Cypress you brought. Thanks again.

These are c. 23cm square and 50cm long. Intended for deep hollowing practice.

Thats good Ern, just remember to hold them solidly. I suggest face plate or rings and long screw, i have not had any luck with tenons or recesses.

It is easy to turn so i reckon you will surprise yourself with the result.

That was only half the block so there is a couple more bits where that came from.

For deep hollowing is it better to have the grain running cross or along the peice.

I know a bloke who just purchased a bigger lathe he might be interested in the other half.

    Thanks for the tips David.

I'll try first with a large tenon held in Titan Powergrips. There's not such a big radius that huge leverage forces will be generated (and I'll see if she'll fit into the spindle steady). That will of course make for an interesting time parting off the base from the sacrificial section. Prob go most of the way down with a cone to steady the open end and then cut off and finish the base by hand.
    Cheers, Ern

It should be fine once you get it round unless you try taking too big a chomp on the inside.
Ern, I'm interested to see how it goes, can you start a new thread & take a few WIP shots & let us know anything that you try that deosn't work right?
    Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

    Sure.

Debating whether to fiddle around yet again to get the Woodfast b/s working properly in order to knock off the corners but otherwise outside shaping will be between centres so just slow.

Figuring on an urn form with wide sacrificial base, and will hollow with Munro and Proforme - both of which will limit the chance of a catch.
