waratah bowl with naturaledge
hi guys,
found this piece on the ''side of the road''
size is about 300mm x 100mm,i took a big chunk out
of the bottom when finishing [don't yah just hate that when it
happens] so i tried to carve a ''wavey foot'' ,i thought the bark
looked a bit like waves to me !
any comments and advice welcome
cheers smiife

Well done on a good save. I looked at the pics before I read your post, and I thought it was an intentional design choice that I thought was very nice. It wasn't until I read your post that I knew the reason for the waves. So yes I think it is beautiful. Love the natural edge and missing side in the top of the bowl

That's an impressive undercut for a natural edge. And I like the additional work done on the foot to reduce it's appearance.
Looks good.Dragonfly
No-one suspects the dragonfly!

I love pieces like this ... I was always told to do three points of contact with feet so that the piece won't rock as the wood moves. I still really like this one though
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

hi corbs,
yeah, i see what you are saying, but this was a foot firstly
so it was level and didn't rock,a chip came out the side so
i just carved/sanded the ''feet'' in ,it is quite solid and doesn't
rock,,,,well not at the moment time will tell i guess
thanks for your comments
cheers smiife

I will sometimes sand the foot off with a 50mm disk on a drill, making a slight dish or depression, then set it down on a piece of sandpaper stuck to a piece of plywood and rub it around in circles until I get a little rim that sits flat.
You can just barely see the little flat rim on the photo below.
Very nice piece. I like the contrast of the smooth inside to the rough edge.So much timber, so little time.
